How we define, control and verify a PFAS-related fabric requirement.

A responsible project begins by agreeing what is not intentionally added, which production controls apply, what will be tested and what the result can demonstrate.

What “PFAS-free” means in a fabric project

PFAS describes a broad class of fluorinated substances. A targeted laboratory method measures a defined list of substances to stated reporting or detection limits. It cannot prove the absolute absence of every possible PFAS compound.

For this reason, CC Textile uses “PFAS-free” only as a practical project description tied to an agreed no-intentionally-added requirement, documented material and chemical inputs, relevant production controls and independent testing. The final scope is confirmed for each fabric and destination market.

Controls begin before the final finish

Define the requirement

Confirm the fabric, garment, destination market, brand RSL, target substance list, method, limits and laboratory.

Review material documentation

Request relevant declarations for yarns, dyes, auxiliaries, softeners, DWR agents and other specified chemical inputs.

Confirm the production route

Identify cross-contamination risks and agree the weaving, dyeing, finishing, cleaning, water-source and handling controls appropriate to the project.

Agree verification checkpoints

Testing can be planned at greige, dyed-before-finishing and final-finished stages when that scope is required and confirmed.

How to read the result

  • ND does not mean absolute zero. It means the measured result was below the stated method detection limit.
  • Limits can differ by substance. A single threshold should not be presented as universal unless the report says so.
  • “Pass” is scope-specific. It means the submitted sample met the client requirements stated in that report.
  • One report does not cover every future batch. Verification applies to the sample and production represented by it.

C0 DWR is water-repellent, not automatically waterproof

A fluorine-free C0 DWR finish can improve surface water repellency. Waterproof performance normally requires an appropriate coating or membrane, garment construction, seam control and testing to an agreed hydrostatic-pressure method.
